After teaching at Glenn for 9 years, retiring Latin teacher Mrs. Anne Bailey will miss the students and teachers. “I’ll miss getting to know the students, watching them grow up, mature. You can’t replace that.”

One significant memory at Glenn High School, Mrs. Bailey recalls “Spring Fling one year, Latin Club has a water balloon booth. And chorus—anytime I hear chorus perform, it’s unforgettable.”

Bailey has plans she has reserved for after her retirement. “There’s so much I wanted to do when I retired. I will garden all I can, go fishing. I might go back to painting. I have a bachelor’s in Fine Arts, and a degree in studio arts.”

“Mrs. B is awesome. She gives us fun projects and activities to do,” says Hailee Moffit

In leaving Glenn, Bailey reflects, “Glenn has the most wonderful environment. Students here are respectful of one another by large; they’re interested in things it’s good to be interested in. We have a wonderful staff.”

Dayna Mayo says, “Mrs. Bailey is a very caring teacher. I have had her for all of my years of high school and she is very interested in her students and passionate about the things she teaches.”

Bailey always enjoyed school, which is why she became a teacher. “I liked being a student. I liked learning.” She first began teaching at her church’s vacation bible school. “[Teaching] came looking for me, if that makes any sense,” she chuckles.

Junior Maranda Brewer reports, “She’s weird, but serious.”

Before Bailey initially began teaching in 2004, “The former principal, Mr. Copeland saw my resume online, and he called me and asked me if I wanted the job. I was pleased to come to Glenn. I also wanted to have my own classroom because I had been teaching different classes in Greensboro.”

“The first time in twenty four years we might not make it to the playoffs,” explained Shane Billings, “I think we can make it, but we need to win the next three games.”

After a underwhelming conference record of 5-9, the odds of three wins in a row were not in their favor. The Bobcats were not fearful; they remained confident.

The Bobcats first had to go up against Ragsdale; they won 11-7. Then they faced High Point Central on Friday and won 4-1. The following game scheduled for Monday was do-or-die for the Bobcats and the weather did not want to cooperate. Monday was canceled due to weather. Tuesday’s weather didn’t look good. If the game wasn’t played that day there were no other options and Bobcats were out of the playoffs.

Everyone thought that the last game was going to rain out. Coach Fowler even went to help prepare the field at East the best they could; this was our team’s last hope of staying alive for the playoffs.

Coach Fowler said, “(We) had A LOT of people praying for God to hold the rains and show us favor.”

The rain threatened and sprinkled, but still the game was able to be played. Junior Mason Striplin started on the mound for the Bobcats as the Bobcats faced the conference number one team Northwest Guilford. He was replaced by Cy Fogleman who got the win for the night.

“Cy won it for us. In two innings the bases were loaded and he was able to shut down the opponents,” said Coach Fowler.

Fowler said, “There were some questionable calls, but the the players stepped up and overcame.”

The Bobcats were able to stay in the game through 9 innings and get the third win. The final score was Glenn 7-Northwest 4. They will face Paige this Friday night on their home field for the first round of the playoffs.

Coach Fowler said, “We were a dangerous team. The other teams were in and had it to lose. I’m thankful that God helped us out.”

Congratulations!

On April 18 through the 20, Glenn High School’s Art Department featured Holding the Torch for Liberty. For $5 admission, play-goers could witness a musical portraying the history of women’s suffrage in the United States. This was the high school premier of Holding the Torch for Liberty.

A quirky, yet poignant performance involving a spritely, personified Statue of Liberty, a posse of women suffragists, and a chauvinistic pants factory owner (Chris Fricault) and his son, a congressman (Connor Schwarz), and a rowdy band of opinionated bigots.
Abbey Vinson suited the role of the Statue of Liberty exceptionally well, from the happy-go-lucky mannerisms, to the perky, optimistic curiosity.

Peyton Walker boldly expressing the role of lead suffragist Susan, and innovative Alice, played by Erin Davis, spurred the actions that led to the granting of women’s rights.

“You were the star of the whole thing!” expressed one audience member to Walker after the show.

“Of course. I am Susan, the lead suffragist,” she replied, jesting.

As I viewed it on the last day it was performed, Saturday April 20, there was an atmosphere of complete relief and satisfaction from the cast and crew with the termination of their final production.

Created by Eli Yamin and Clifford Carlson of the Jazz Drama Program in New York City, Holding the Torch for Liberty was designed to be a jazz musical.

It’s that time for all of the seniors involved in the dance department here at Glenn to unwrap our dance tights one last time for the final dance concert. Tears will be shed, flowers will be handed out to those who have donated much of their time to the well-being of the concert.

‘The Release’ is the official theme of the spring concert, and it symbolizes the releasing of students off into the world to achieve great things without the help of the Glenn teachers. Ms. Rice and Mrs. Gaddy have been putting a lot of hard work and time into the school year and dance concert, and have only high hopes for what’s to come.

Kaylen Williams, a senior here at Glenn, is the most choked up with the coming of her last ever Glenn dance concert. It took years for Kaylen to get to where she is at technique-wise, and leadership wise. This dedicated student has been on the varsity dance team for most of her years, and even became Captain this year.

“This is making me so said,” says Williams. “Tear tear.”

The main focus of the dance concert is to recognize all of the seniors and their hard work for the past four years they have been enrolled in a dance class. Many of them will be dancing their all on that Thursday night, and you can only expect great things from each of the seniors!

Support Glenn’s dance department by purchasing a ticket and seeing a phenominal show on May 16, 2013.

Today marks National College Decision Day, the day most colleges across the country require a decision and a deposit from accepted students. While some students have already made their commitment, many will need this time to review their financial aid, visit colleges, and make their final decision.

This can be an exciting yet stressful time for high school seniors, and all this information can be a bit overwhelming at times. Just remember to stay focused and prioritize your tasks-you haven’t walked across that stage yet, so your work for those few remaining courses is still important. Schools will constantly remind admitted students of the significance of their final transcripts, so don’t let senioritis completely take over your life.

Deciding where you want to go to college is a monumental decision in a student’s life. This school will be your home for the foreseeable future, so don’t make the choice lightly. Give it some time, think it over, and be sure to keep an eye on those important dates for the college of your choice. Best of luck at whatever post-graduation plans you may have. The Class of 2013 is truly a class to be remembered, so as we go our separate ways and venture out into the world, keep up the hard work and do great things at wherever life takes you.

Yet another movie about aliens, The Host, directed by Andrew Niccol, portrays a different take on typical alien invasions; the hijacking of our souls. That’s right, the glowing, mesmerizing, tendril-adorned aliens within us—or rather the characters in the movie.

Based on Stephanie Meyer’s novel of the same name, The Host, released in March of 2013, follows the experience of the victimized protagonist, Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), as she battles with the Soul that has been granted control of her body.

Surprisingly, the Soul within Melanie decided not to ignore her petty protests, but instead heeded her persistent demands and sympathetically allied with her (as if the protagonist would be taken captive and die before the halfway mark in the movie). After the alien-within-human duo trek through the desert, she reunited with her family, who no longer entirely trusted her, and thus held her captive. One of the other humans, Ian O’Shea (Jake Abel), whom had joined her family, gazed at her admiringly. Keep in mind that she had already met Jared Howe (max Irons) and, yes, they’re in a relationship. But wait, before you think a love triangle is destined to form, hear me out. Ian’s particular admiration is not for Melanie, but for the Soul within her. That’s right; this dude is in love with an alien.

Even if aliens aren’t your preference, you romantics would get a kick out of this movie. Do not assume this is just another sci-fi, twisted love story—well it is, but there are unexpected nooks and crannies of the movie’s plot that I haven’t touched upon so you can experience them for yourselves. The bottom line: The Host is definitely worth your time, if not for the entertaining plot, for the underlying interpretations, otherwise known as symbolism.

On Friday April, 12, Mrs. Joyner, Mrs. Hefner, and Mrs. Hendrix took many students to Caleb’s Creek Elementary school to do fun science experiments with all of the kids. Taking an activity bus, everyone was full of enthusiasm and talking before they got to the school.

“It was fun being with kids. I had fun messing with them,” said Ivan Sanchez.

The kids were so excited to see all of the experiments being held and learned a lot during the course of the time they were in the gym. You could see normally quiet people come to life around these kids. Conducting so many different experiments, the kids all found it interesting.

“The little kids got to rub balloons on my hair and make me have a bad hair day, but it was okay, I got to do the same to them. They knew about electricity and I thought they were really smart. They had fun,” explained Paula Templeton.

There were electricity experiments, volcanoes, and plants, along with so many different things they got to do. Even the teachers and principals participated in the electricity experiment.

It was a total hit and Mrs. Joyner almost teared up thanking the Glenn students for coming. She said, “It means the world to me that y’all went!”
